SA: Woomera centre to be mothballed from today
The Woomera Detention Centre in South Australia's north will be officially mothballed from today.
The closure will bring an end to the controversial facility, which has been the sceneof violent disturbances, hunger strikes and self mutilation by asylum seekers since itsopening in 1999.
At this time last year the centre was the subject of a major protest, with demonstratorshelping 50 detainees to escape when they pushed over perimeter fences.
At its peak Woomera held more than 1,400 asylum seekers, but today the ImmigrationDepartment says it's home to just six.
They're expected to be moved to the Baxter Detention Centre near Port Augusta.
