Fed: Arctic adventurers just 51kms from goal
Adventurers ERIC PHILIPS and JON MUIR are just 51 kilometres from achieving their goalof becoming the first unassisted Australian trek to the North Pole.
A spokeswoman for their Global Icetrek expedition says up to last night, the pair hadtravelled 887.7 km.
They may cover the remaining 51 km in two days, arriving on Wednesday -- two days aheadof schedule.
The spokeswoman says the sudden increase in speed is partly due to the pair findingsome open leads of water travelling in the same direction as they are, so they have spenttwo days paddling their kayaks.
The pair left the edge of the ice sea in the Siberian Arctic on March 4, after severaldays of false starts due to bad weather.
They plan to cover the almost 1000 km to the North Pole without using dogs or planesto re-supply their trek.
