Sri Lanka, March 2 -- The Government has made compulsory the displaying of prices products that are promoted or advertised through the print or electronic media with effect from yesterday.
Co-operatives and Internal Trade told the Daily News that the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) issued the relevant Gazette notification on displaying the prices of products in advertisements, telecast or broadcasting through the media yesterday.
Therefore, displaying prices of products which are advertised through television, radio, print, Internet or any other media is compulsory from today," the Minister said.
The Government has brought new laws to prevent advertising of products without displaying their prices to provide more transparency which will be beneficial to consumers, traders, and manufactures. The people become more knowledgeable about prices of products when the relevant prices are displaced on goods.
Therefore traders, are unable to deceive consumers furthermore.
"We provided a one month's grace period for Advertising Companies following their requests to overcome several practical problems pertaining to the new laws even though the new regulations were due to the implement from last month,the Minister said.
Minister Fernando further said that stern action will be taken against traders who sell goods to consumers without price tags.
